The Dalai Lama essay focuses on genetic engineering. In the beginning of the essay, it starts applying it only to changing the genetics of produces items and wheat and grain. When in talking about changing the genetics it talks about the benefits which include being immune to pests and having a longer shelf life, along with many other benefits. Then the essay starts to ease into the more serious topic of gene editing on embryos. In the essay it touches on the idea if there is enough scientific knowledge to go with gene editing. The essay also brings up the idea if gene editing is truly ethical. It also mentions a few of the purpose gene editing on embryos whether it forms picking the sex of or embryo or if it is for medical purposes to prevent a disease of disability forming. Lastly it talks about how no matter what disease or disability you have, you still have a purpose in this world.

  1. “The benefits are obviously wonderful,”(Lama, 63). After this claim was made the essay talks about the effects of gene editing on produce items and wheat and grains.

I agree because this can be beneficial when there are shortages of these items.

Personal Claim: Gene editing on crops and produce items has great effects.

2. “The issue here are not just medical but ethical and can affect the psychological well-being of the people concerned, (Lama,65).

I agree because choosing to do gene editing could truly affect the mental health of the person.

Personal Claim: The idea of gene editing can have an impact on the way people mentally feel, which people don’t realize because they only think it is a medical and ethical issue.

3. “All human beings have an equal value and an equal potential for goodness,”(Lama,67).

I agree because everyone’s worth should be treated equally no matter what differences they have.

Personal Claim: No matter the disease of disability the person may have, they still have potential in their own way in the world.

4. “…holistic and integrated outlook at the level of human society that recognizes the fundamentally interconnected nature of all living beings and their environment,(Lama,69).

I agree because peoples opinion or lifestyles should be brushed away just because something is medically or ethical.

Personal Claim: When considering gene editing people need to look at the whole person, just not the ethical side.
