What good is art?
Art is a beautiful eye grabber. Art has many purposes. Art can be made to bring up a viewers emotion, to tell a story, to share a political view, or to simply just be pretty. Art doesn’t have to have a purpose to be considered good art. If an artist puts in effort, art is good. Art can be meaningless to someone and still be consider good, all for what the artist puts into the work. Art can also come in different forms, whether it is music, paintings, journals, social media, plays it is all good art. There is no form of art that is known to be better then others it is all just a preference on whether a viewer considers the art to be good or not.
Do you agree with Nina Simone’s that it is the “artist duty to reflect the times”?
I disagree with Nina Simone. I don’t think it is the artist duty to reflect the times. Saying it is an artist duty to reflect the times impacts other artist that they have to live up to an exceptions to reflect the times, when they might not have anything to reflect one. Everyone is different, and has different stories to tell. I believe that if an artist would like to reflect the times, they then should go ahead and do that and share there stories for others to learn about.
If its not arts responsibility to reflect the time, then whose is it?
I think if the artist choses to reflect the time, then it is up to the viewer to interpret it that way or to not. Art shouldn’t be forced to be seen a certain way and that is why it should be left up to the viewer

You make some good points in these ruminations… Have you devised your thesis statement yet? [I am not sure you answered the question: WHOSE job is it to “reflect the times”? Teachers? Lawmakers? Is it everyone’s moral obligation to be “awake” in troubling times?]
