Freedom as a concept is more important than the individual freedoms of a specific group of people. Freedom is defined as not being restricted or oppressed. Yoshino believes that freedom is more important than individual freedom of a specific group due to the fact that everyone should be treated equally. In the article Yoshino examines, “Equality claims- such as group-based accommodation claims inevitably involve the court in picking favorites among groups” (543). This statement means that the court shouldn’t be biased to specific groups by favoring them. Additionally, this demonstrates the effect of individual freedoms of a specific group of people and how it leads to incomplete solutions and biased conclusions. Having individual freedoms of a specific group of people takes away from the idea of freedom as a whole by making others feel restricted to what they can say and how they can act. Focusing on freedom as a concept rather than focusing freedom on specific groups helps people not be restricted or oppressed.
